A guy in my LUG is looking for input on the Netbook craze. I have to turn to the masses to try and help him out.

Umm,  What OS is on a laptop should be as important as what hardware is inside. Buying hardware that is FLOSS friendly is VERY important to me. If my hardware is not supported by the stock Fedora kernel I have done something wrong in choosing my hardware.

There are some Netbooks that I would avoid from what I have seen in the #fedora IRC channel. One comes to mind, it runs a very old and modified version of Fedora, I think the distro name is Linpuss or somthing, that has had no security updates from us in several years.

I have thrown out a request for input/opinions to some friends of mine that do more of the front line support than I do to see what they have found.

He said the Acer Aspire One he picked up in August had this Linpus, Fedora 8 based not Fedora 6, on it and it works out of the box with Fedora 10, there were some issues with Fedora 9.

Hey Bob-o,
Yes, the AA1 is indeed a great little netbook, but its single greatest flaw is the slow, Slow, SLOW 8GB flash in the version I have (8MB/s writes). Still, I'd rather have the slow flash in it, than a spinning HDD.

I'd actually wait a few months for the next batch of netbooks to come out based on Intel's new Atom N280 chipset. They'll get much battery life, and actually be able to play 720p content smoothly.

Asus EeePC

Generally the EeePC's are golden. Eeedora used to be around (based on f8) but has since been obsolete as all the drivers necessary are in the updated Fedora 9 and GOLD Fedora 10.

It uses an atheros wireless.
